Key Cabinet
I made a cabinet for my mom for Mothers Day to hold spare keys. My parents have a small cabinet that didn't have enough room for all the extra keys. The cabinet is made out of oak and the hardware is brass. I used mortise and tenon joinery for everything and mortised the hinges. I couldn't find any handles that I liked, so I made some on the lathe. I turned a test piece out of aluminum and replicated it in brass when I was satisfied with the design. I attempted a two tone stain finish, using golden oak on the door panels and red mahogany on everything else before the glue up. When it was assembled, it looked awful, so I went over everything with a tinted polyurethane. The door panels stayed a bit lighter, which is what I wanted. I deglossed most of the finish and scuffed some of the edges for an aged look and I didn't lacquer the knobs, so they should start to tarnish.
